ANNUAL MASTER THESIS CONFERENCE
FOR IFB UG&MUG STUDENTS AND INVITED GUESTS
ORGANISED BY THE STUDENTS AND AUTHORITIES OF INTERCOLLEGIATE FACULTY OF BIOTECHNOLOGY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GDAŃSK AND MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF GDAŃSK
HONORARY SPEAKER
Sylwia Klińska-Bąchor, PhD
„Fantastic acyltransferases and how to use them: a story of plant stress and omega-3 fatty acids”
Assistant Professor at the Laboratory of Plant Biochemistry
Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG & MUG, Poland

In 2022, she earned her PhD in Biological Sciences for research on phospholipid remodeling in the oilseed crop Camelina sativa. Following her doctoral studies, she completed an internship at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp, Sweden, and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher in a Polish-Chinese project at IFB UG&MUG.
As the Principal Investigator of a National Science Centre (NCN) OPUS 26 project, she investigates the physiological role of LPCAT enzymes, key players in the remodeling of phosphatidylcholine, the dominant membrane phospholipid, in plant adaptation to environmental stresses, including extreme temperatures, drought, and flooding. Her research interests also include the role of microalgal acyltransferases involved in the biosynthesis of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Beyond her scientific work, she is actively engaged in science policy as a member of the Young Scientists Council at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. She is also involved in science outreach, participating in initiatives such as Biologists’ Night, BiotechWeek, the Pomeranian Night of Scientists, and the Summer School of Biotechnology (2025). She is a member of the Polish Society of Experimental Plant Biology, the FEBS Junior Section, and the Polish Biochemical Society, where she serves as Vice-Chair of its Gdańsk Branch. She is also an Assistant Editor of Acta Biochimica Polonica.
Her work has been recognized with several awards, including the START scholarship of the Foundation for Polish Science (2025) and the Jan Uphagen Award of the City of Gdańsk (2025).
PRESENTATIONS BY YOUNG RESEARCHERS
Public presentation of the results of the master’s thesis is a key element of the graduation process
at the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and Medical University of Gdańsk (IFB).
From the beginning of the Faculty, presentations were held as a part of the International Student Scientific Conference (ISSC) organised by the Medical University of Gdańsk, and since 2009 as a part of the Biotechnology Students’ Conference.
The conference is organised by the Students of the IFB together with the Faculty Authorities.
The conference is in English and is also attended by foreign Erasmus students carrying out their master’s theses at our Faculty.

Networking
Scientific conference is a great opportunity to learn about the scientific development of your peers and colleagues

Young researchers
All speakers will be young scientists at the beginning of their scientific career

Quick start
Our conference is a trouble-free introduction to the rules of the largest scientific conferences

Awards
During the conference, the best presentations will receive awards from sponsors and the Dean’s College
